“dixie LD f TECH TIPS Dixie Part Numbers: S-1397 S-1408 $-1415 S-1429 Applications: 1999 — 2000 Cadillac Escalade 1995 — 2000 Chevrolet S and T Series Pickup 1995 — 2000 GMC S and T Series Pickup 1996 — 2000 Chevrolet C, K, Trucks with 4.3L 5.0, 5.7 or 7.4L engines 1996 — 2000 Chevrolet Express, G and P Series Vans with 4.3L 5.0, 5.7 or 7.4L engines 1996 — 2000 Oldsmobile Bravada Condition: The operator of the vehicle may complain of one or more of the following conditions: – Backfiring during cranking/starting – Kickback during starting – Slow or hard cranking – Not starting – Grinding or noisy cranking The technician may observe one or more of the following conditions: – Diagnostic trouble code P0338 stored in the system. – The starter housing is found broken. – The engine block is broken at the starter-mounting boss – A broken ring gear on the flywheel. Cause: A potential cause for this is that the crankshaft position sensor may command up to 50 degrees of extra spark advance during engine cranking. This creates extremely high force on the starter, ring gear, flywheel and engine block. Correction: Check if diagnostic code P0338 is present, if so the crankshaft position sensor must be replaced. The crankshaft sensor part number is 10456607. Inspect the ring gear, some wear on the teeth is normal but missing, broken or cracked teeth are not normal and the ring gear/flywheel must be replaced if any of the fore-mentioned conditions exist.
