The technician will observe that additional ground connections have been made to the battery for aftermarket accessories. Cause: The vehicle has a device affixed to the battery cable connector for the engine control module to monitor the state of charge and state of health of the battery (measures both voltage and temperature). The engine control module uses this information to determine if the Idle-Stop and Go feature is to be activated and when the engine is running what output the alternator should provide to maintain the battery voltage. Any additional ground wiring not installed properly will create improper voltage readings and prevent the alternator from operating properly. Correction: Follow the manufacturer’s recommended inspection and diagnostic procedures when testing the battery and/or charging system and always follow the manufacturer’s procedures when adding additional electrical accessories to the vehicle.
