chiwia | # | [ { 8 | averse Y TECH TIPS Dixie Part Numbers: S-2095 S-2098 S-2099 S-2124 $-8423 Applications: 1999 — 2003 Excursion 1999 — 2003 Super Duty F Series Pick Up Condition: Some Ford SuperDuty and Excursion vehicles may exhibit the condition of the starter staying engaged with the flywheel after the key is released from the start position, repeat starter failures or an ignition lock that is sticking or binding when turning the key. Cause(s): 1) The ignition lock cylinder could be faulty and binding resulting in the switch mechanism not returning to the run position from the start position and/or 2) Ashort circuit on the starter relay circuit and/or 3) A sticking starter relay and/or 4) An internal short circuit in the power distribution box. Correction: Test the starter relay circuit for short circuit by verifying the voltage readings at terminal #2 on the starter relay. Moving the key from “Off” to “Run” with the engine off there should be no voltage, if there is voltage locate and repair the short circuit. Remove terminal #2 from the relay and with the vehicle in park check the voltage readings at the starter switch terminal by turning the key from “Start” to “Run”. If there is voltage present after the key returns to the “Run” position a scan tool must be used to check the ignition lock following the manufacturers recommended procedures. If the above checks good and voltage is still present, check the starter relay for sticking by swapping it with a known good relay and repeat the test for voltage at the starter switch terminal.
