ELECTRICAL REBUILDER’S ASSOCIATION—Technical Document $S201406D wwwelectricalrebuilders.org Quality Concerns PG260M Drive Problem BY WALTER BEACHAM [on ordered some drives to rebuild several OE Delco PG260M marine starters, 9000819, Lester number 6560. This starter is identical to Lester 6449, except that the rear CE housing does not have a vent, and the solenoid is four-terminal with an R connection. When I installed a drive in the first starter, I noticed that it was hanging up and not returning properly on the shaft—unless I pushed it back manually. After checking the solenoid and the shaft for abnormalities, I compared the aftermarket drive with the OE drive. I noticed that the collar washer was in the wrong place (see Figure 1). The shift lever fits tight in the aftermarket drive (the one on the right in the photo). You can see that the collar washer on the OE drive (the one on the left) is farther from the body, allowing more room for shift- lever movement. Walt Beacham is the owner of Beacham Marine, Pasadena, Md. Figure 1—The OE drive is on the left. Notice how the shift collar is slightly higher than the shift collar on the aftermarket drive.
