The technician may note that the gas motor seems to be fine (compression, fuel delivery and spark are all there) and that the battery, wiring and starter all seem to be in proper working order. Replacing the starter has no effect. Cause: Two possible causes for the above condition are: – Adamaged flywheel key way. This will result in premature ignition. – Improperly adjusted valves. There is a decompression feature built into some camshafts that allows the starter to crank the engine with the valves partially open and upon starting the push-rod clearance changes allowing the valves to completely close. Correction: Verify what the cause is by performing the following: – Inspect the keyway on the flywheel for damage, and replace it if required. – Inspect the valve clearance and ensure that it is within the manufacturer’s tolerances.
