mode ) TECH TIPS Dixie Part Numbers: A-8898 Applications: 2000 — 2001 Honda Odyssey Condition: When the engine is hot and idling with the air conditioning on a buzzing sound may be heard from the alternator. Cause: The alternator drive belt may amplify the normal alternator operating noise. Correction: Perform the diagnosis described in the procedure below. 1. Check the part number on the drive belt (if legible) if the number is 38920- P8F-A04 the belt will require changing as described in steps 5 to 8. If the number can not be read check for the source of the noise. 2. Start the engine and allow it to warm up to operating temperature. Allow the cooling fans to cycle on and off 2 times. Turn the air conditioner on at the lowest setting and let the engine idle. 3. If you can hear the buzzing noise from the alternator area when the air conditioning compressor runs follow the repair procedures described in steps 5 to 8. 4. lf the buzzing noise is coming from another area continue looking for the source. 5. Move the automatic belt tensioner to relieve the tension from the belt. Remove the belt 6. Loosen the two alternator mounting bolts and then torque the 10mm bolt to 29 — 32 LB-ft and the 8mm bolt to15 — 16 LB-ft. *** NOTE the torque values given apply only to address this issue for any other condition refer to the torque specifications in the manufacture’s service manual.*** 7. Install the new belt. 8. Start the engine and allow it to warm up to operating temperature. Allow the cooling fans to cycle on and off 2 times. Turn the air conditioner on at the lowest setting and let the engine idle. Make sure that the noise is gone.
