Tech Tip Follow up A “Tech Tip” ran on page 4 of the December 2006 Exchange regarding flickering lights on the 2005 Saturn RELAY minivan raised a question from reader George West of AIM: “The two OE numbers listed to correct the problem are what we (and Lester) show as the original units used to begin with. Is it being suggested that the installer replace a problem alternator with another of the same part number, or am I missing something?” Dan Poremba of REGITAR-USA has provided the following: “OEM, factory installed alternators are being replaced (according to Motor magazine, August 2006) on Saturn RELAYS to eliminate owner-reported complaints of ‘flickering headlights and interior lights.’ This prob- lem may also affect Buick Terraza, Chevy Upland, and Pontiac Montana as they are known to have the same alterna- tor; General Motors 15215546, the 105 amp is being superceded to 15784559 the 125A, and 15215547 105A to 15784560, the 125 amp. The exact nature of the problem within the factory installed alternator and their content was not reported and remains generally unknown as of this writing. The National Highway Transportation Safety Assoc. (NHTSA) notice is 10014992°” Anyone having more detailed OEM sourced documentation is invited to submit it for review, verification and publication by ERE for the benefit of all.
