Rebuilding Forklift Alternators and Starters By Larry Hagemeister It is important for rebuilders to share the information they have acquired with other rebuilders to keep this industry strong. Here is some information based on my own personal experience. Hopefully it will inspire other rebuilders to share their experiences. As a rebuilder, one of the most frus- trating things is when you are presented with a unit to rebuild, research what you need for parts, and find out there are few or no parts available. You will have to contact the equipment dealer to get parts—the customer could have done that. A new commercial account contacted us about rebuilding forklift alternators and starters, they turned out to be 24 volt Mitsubishi units off mid-90’s Cat forklift alternator (no. A3TN5883, 24V, 35 amp; starter MOO8T60372). When the units were torn down to figure out what they needed, all the suppliers could come up with was a seal kit and front bearing for the alternator. With the help of Romaine Electric in Seattle, Washington, we were able to find limited parts for the starter. They were not sure all parts would work, but we were willing to give it a try (from the limited parts available). The only thing that had to be modified were the mounting holes for the sec- ondary solenoid. I went to work on finding parts for the alternator, the original rectifier had a m6x25mm battery stud. I found a rectifier that would work, but it had a m8x25mm battery stud. The battery output hole in the SRE frame had to be drilled out to 7/16 to accommodate a 5/16 insulator from a Leece Neville alternator. You will need to provide a 5/16 yellow ring terminal on the battery output stud for the installer, the terminal on the machine is only a no. 10 ring. I was able to get the stator and rotor rewound if needed. The extra work to find parts was very time consuming, however, we have rebuilt several of the units with no problems and had very good profits.
