Tech Tips Replacing Bosch Slip Rings By Larry Hagemeister This method works well when replacing Bosch slip rings because it is quick and you don’t have to move slip ring wires. Using two half moon pieces of steel, approximately six inches in diameter, slide the two halves together and drill a 3/4-inch hole in the center. Using a 40- or SOMT stripped out field case, stand the field case up and place the rotor in the center of the case. Then slide the two halves of steel together under the slip rings, letting the rotor hang down in the case. Heat the slip rings with a torch (use good judgment here, do not get too hot). Be sure to place the two halves of steel so the rotor’s wires will not be disturbed. When the slip rings are hot enough, using a soft mallet (dead blow ham- mer), hit the rotor on the end of the shaft. Be careful to put something in the bottom of the field case to catch the rotor. The slip rings will come off easily. Press the new slip rings on. The wires should be tinned and be laying right where they need to be. Resolder the wires to the slip rings.
