’ chawie . & | [| { 8 | LD f TECH TIPS Starter Trouble Shooting Guide Listed below are some of the more common problems that occur in starters along with some of the likely causes and remedies. Due to the number of types of units and systems that exist this is only a general listing of the most common problems, possible causes and remedies that are possible. Also check for vehicle specific Dixie Tech Tips. Symptom Starter does not operate, or starter operates slowly Possible Causes Remedy e Weak or dead battery e Charge or replace the battery e Bad starting system cables or connections e Repair/replace cables and connectors e Bad ignition switch and/or wiring e Repair/replace the switch or wiring e Bad starter e Replace the starter e Bad starter solenoid e Replace the starter or solenoid e Overheated engine e Allow the engine to cool, possibly install a heat shield on the starter. If the problem persists check the engine cooling system e Incorrect engine oil (too heavy) or old oil e Replace oil with correct viscosity e Incorrect battery (CCA rating too low) e Replace battery with proper battery Symptom Starter motor runs, but does not turn the engine over (does not engage the ring gear or flywheel) Possible Causes Remedy e Faulty solenoid e Replace the solenoid or starter e Faulty ring gear or flywheel e Replace the ring gear or flywheel e Improper shimming/Installation of the e Check and adjust the starter starter shimming/positioning e Bad starter drive e Replace the starter Symptom Starter remains engaged after the engine starts Possible Causes Remedy e Improper shimming of the starter e Check and adjust shims e Faulty ignition switch or solenoid wiring e Repair or replace the wiring/switch e Faulty solenoid e Replace the solenoid or starter e Starter mounting hardware is loose (starter e Align starter and tighten hardware misalignment) e Low voltage to the starter e Load test the battery and check the wiring for voltage drops REV: 20090820 Courtesy Dixie Technical Department TSB_020.doc Dixie Tech Tips are intended for use by professional technicians, and are not for the general public.
