Cause: If the vehicle is shifted into gear immediately after starting the engine without allowing the engine to return to idle the PCM logic was initially programmed to prevent the alternator from charging. Correction: 1) Ensure that the battery is fully charged, perform an inspection of the charging system and ensure all connections are tight and secure. 2) Verify the cause by starting the vehicle and shifting before the vehicle returns to idle. 3) If this triggers the light the PCM may require calibrating to the latest factory requirements. Follow the OE manufacturers’ recommended procedures for updating the PCM.
