Cause: If the battery has been disconnected, if the battery has drained for any reason or if the engine control module has been accessed for any reason (using a diagnostic scan tool) the engine control module looses the transmission selection position data and must be reset. Correction: Re-teach the electronic control module the transmission selection positioning by performing the following steps: e Ensure that the battery is reconnected and the scan tool removed from the system Switch the ignition on (but do not crank the engine) Press the brake pedal down e Shift the transmission selector from the park position to the sport position and then back to the park position e Release the brake pedal e Switch off the ignition. The electronic control module has now learned the transmission selection positions.
