Condition: The technician may question how to test the functionality of the safety relay. Cause: The safety relay operates a little differently then a typical IMS switch. It is designed to disable the starter once the engine is running. Correction: While there are different plug connectors or terminals on the ends of the leads depending on the part number being tested the procedure is the same. – Connect an ohm meter between the two thickest wires (one connects to B+ on the starter and the other to the switch terminal on the starter). – Connect the thin solid black wire to ground. – Apply power to the black lead with the white trace, the contacts should close and the ohm meter should read 0 Ohms. – Then apply power to the green lead and then the black wire with the white trace and nothing should happen. On the vehicle the green wire is fed power once the engine is running and prevents the starter from being cranked.
