N Replace magnetic switch. Yes Does engine turn normally? Check ignition/fuel system. No (Turns Slowly) OK. , Repair starter motor. Check battery as follows: © Charging condition Terminal connections ¢ Terminal corrosion. N.G. 4) Does gear shaft turn? es No Check reduction gear, armature and gear shaft. Replace. Check pinion clutch Charge battery Repair connections and corrosion of battery terminals Replace magnetic switch. Yes — Replace magnetic switch. Does starter turn under no load by connecting wires as shown? No – Repair starter motor. Starting System Construction Magnetic Switch Check Before starting to check, disconnect battery ground cable. Disconnect “M” terminal of starter motor. Perform continuity test (between “S” terminal and switch body). If no conti- nuity, replace. Perform continuity test (between “S” terminal and “M” terminal). If no conti- nuity, replace. opposite direction. If it locks or rotates in both directions, or unusual resistance is evident, replace. “M” Terminal Pinion/Clutch Check Inspect pinion teeth. Replace pinion if teeth are worn or damaged. (Also check condition of ring gear teeth.) Inspect reduction gear teeth. Replace reduction gear if teeth are worn or dam- aged. (Also check condition of armature shaft gear teeth.) Check to see if pinion locks in one direction and rotates smoothly in the Type 1 Type 2 Type 3 Type 4 Type 5 Brush Check Brush Check wear of brush. Wear limit length: Refer to S.D.S.
